So you don't get an air bubble inside the pickup when you change oil.

thats what i thought ,it was the only logical use , could kinda suck air if the oil level gets low though
I guess technically it could but that's why you want to keep your oil full. As long as the oil level is normal, it's got enough oil above it that it won't suck in air.
